Here's an overview of its historical journey:

Ancient Period: The history of Agra can be traced back to ancient times when it was known as Agravan, which is mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. It is believed to be founded by the famous Hindu king, Raja Badal Singh.

Medieval period (Mughal period): Agra rose to prominence during the Mughal Empire. In 1526, the first Mughal emperor Babur captured the city. However, it was his grandson, Emperor Akbar, who made Agra the capital of the empire in 1556. During Akbar's reign, Agra experienced a cultural renaissance, with the construction of iconic buildings such as the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

Shahjahan and the Taj Mahal: Agra reached the peak of its glory during the reign of Emperor Shahjahan (1628–1658). He founded many architectural wonders, the most famous of which is the Taj Mahal. Built as the mausoleum of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal is one of the most recognizable symbols of love and is considered a masterpiece of Mughal architecture.

British colonial period: In the early 19th century, Agra came under British rule following the British East India Company's conquest of India. Although Agra lost its political importance during this period, it remained a cultural and historical centre.

After Independence: After India gained independence from British rule in 1947, Agra became part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. The city continued to flourish as a tourist destination, largely because of its Mughal-era monuments, especially the Taj Mahal.

Modern Times: Today, Agra is a bustling city with a blend of modernity and historical charm. It attracts millions of tourists from all over the world who come to admire its architectural wonders, especially the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Additionally, Agra is famous for its handicrafts, including marble inlay work and traditional embroidery.

Throughout its history, Agra has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the flourishing of art and culture, and an enduring legacy of architectural genius. It remains a testament to India's rich heritage and continues to mesmerize visitors with its timeless beauty.
